Cornfields of Opportunity

Alright, I have a confession to make.  I've never actually written a blog before.  Heck, I'm not even sure if I've ever even read a blog.  But hopefully this one will work out for me...and for you, my handful of readers.  I wasn't planning on doing this, but I've found three reasons for writing that convinced me to start a blog:

  1. I'm going off to college soon, and supposedly this will help "keep my friends and family back home informed."
  2. Apparently I tell funny stories that tend to have people rolling on the floor laughing.  Why not write them down?
  3. Maybe this will be a new form of venting for me...to spare my new roommate of a few of my typical--yet often entertaining--rants.
So if you're not blind, you can tell by the title of this blog that I'm going to college in Sioux City, Iowa.  (And if you are blind, you're probably not reading this anyway.)  If you're looking for a true taste of Sioux City this very minute, you've come to the wrong place.  I don't move in until August 14th.
But I have been down to Sioux City three times for visits to my school in the past year, so let me tell you what I know about northwestern Iowa's hot spot:

  • It's home to the Tyson Events Center, where I will hopefully be seeing a few concerts with my new friends...that I haven't met yet.
  • It has been given the loving nickname of "Sewer City" because, well, it generally smells pretty bad.  But don't worry, I've been told it only smells really bad two days out of the year. (My second visit was on one of those days.)
  • It's right near the border of South Dakota and Nebraska.  For someone who rarely leaves Minnesota, this is a pretty big deal.  I plan to cross over the border about once a week, just so I can feel like a seasoned traveler.
  • It has a Target!
  • And finally, you've heard of Minnesota nice?  Well welcome to Iowa SUPER nice.  During my first visit to Sioux City, they really rolled out the red carpet for me.  Sure, it's a smaller town than what I'm used to.  But the people are genuine, and they'll welcome you with open arms.
Come hell or high water (especially now, during flood season), Sioux City will be my home for the next four years.  I have no idea what I'm in for, but I have a feeling that this could be the ride of my life.

Stay tuned!  I'm going to try really hard to keep posting updates on my life, so you can follow my exciting journey through what I like to call the cornfields of opportunity.  :)
